Klee's Hen and Chicks
27.5 x 27.5 inches (70 x 70cm)
Cottons and San Blas appliqued molas, machine pieced and hand quilted.

The hen mola came first here. Then came the 'Hen and Chicks' patchwork pattern which morphed into Paul Klee's arrow symbols when I started making fabric decisions. Amazingly I discovered the British textile print based on Klee's work in my stash and after that the quilting design required no decisions - my needle just "took a walk" as Klee often said about his pencil. However, since hand quilting is permission for my brain to also wander at will, I couldn't help but remember the 20 years my parents were KFC franchisees and what chickens had meant to my family. The upper left blue quadrant is a needled sketch of the original KFC image building.
